The Debut (2005-2006)

SS501 (더블에스오공일), pronounced as Double-S 501 or Deo Beul Ae Seu Oh Gong Il, is a South Korean 5 members boy band under the management of DaeSung Entertainment. The name ‘SS501’ derives from the combination of the alphabet and numbers that holds special meanings in them. The first “S” stands for “Super” “Star” . The second “S” is an abbreviation for “Singer”. The number 5, 0, and 1 represents “five members united as one forever”.

SS501 made its first appearance through M!Pick by MNET on March 07, 2005. The group then officially made their first debut stage on Show! Music Tank on June 08, 2005 with their first single “Kyeonggo” (Korean: “경고”, “Warning”). The success of their debut was proven when the group released their second single titled “Snow Prince” later in December 08. 2005.

On the December 18, 2005, their Official Fan Club known as “Triple S” was established.

Their effort was paid off when the group was awarded with 3 Best New Male Group Awards in the same year on KM Music Festival (2005.11.27), SBS Gayo DaeJeon (2005.12.29) and MBC 10th Gasoo Gayojae (2005.12.31) respectively.

On April 16, 2006, SS501 held their first Mini Fan Meet in Japan. Despite being inactive in Korea for most of 2006, the group held their first concert “Step-Up Concert” in Seoul, Korea on April 16, 2006 with success. In the late 2006, the group resumed their activities in Korea when they released their first full length album titled “S.T 01 NOW” on November 10, 2006.

Year 2006 ended with a sweet note when SS501 was awarded with the MKMF (Mnet KM Music Festival) Best Dance Group Award.


Perservering (2007 – 2008)

In the year 2007, SS501 made its debut into the Japanese market.
A Japanese Fan Club with the name of “Triple S Japan (TSJ)” was formed on March 25, 2007. SS501 released their first Japanese single “Kokoro” on August 01, 2007, alongside with multiple versions. One of which with all members and five others featuring the members individually. The single debuted at #5 on the Oricon chart, and move to #3 the next day. A full Japanese Album titled “SS501” was released the same year on October 24.

In 2008, SS501 returned to Korea with their single Deja Vu released on March 8, 2008. After success with their single “Deja Vu”, SS501 began to promote their second single, “A Song Calling for You”. They had their Goodbye Stage on Music Bank on June 6, 2008 before returning to Japan to resume their Japanese activities.

Through MBC variety reality show “We Got Married”, Leader Kim Hyun Joong received much attention for his 4D personality and soon, it was announced that Kim Hyun Joong will be casted as “Yoon Ji Hoo” for the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango, officially named Boys Over Flowers.

Shortly after Leader Kim Hyun Joong, Member Park Jung Min was too casted in the musical “Grease”. Park Jung Min made his musical debut on November 21, 2008 as Danny Park.

With Kim Hyun Joong and Park Jung Min on solo activities, the next SS501 album was pushed back to July 2009. As such, the other three members formed a sub-unit with Heo Young Saeng as the leader. On the November 26, 2009, the sub-unit group release their first project group album titled “U R Man”. Besides promoting their first single “U R Man”, the also promoted their single for Boys Over Flower soundtrack, “Nae Meoriga Nabbaseo” (“내 머리가 나빠서”, “Because I’m Stupid”). Due to the success of the drama, the song achieved a high number of downloads.

Kim Hyun Joong and SS501’s popularity was taken to another level higher when Boys Over Flower became not only a hit in Korea, but also in Asia such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and etc.


Rebirth, SS501 First Asia Tour (2009 – 2010)

On May 13, 2009, SS501 released their second Japanese album titled “All My Love” and had a promotional tour in Japan in support of the album. The group also released their Solo Collection, consisting of the individual members’ songs.

After concentrating on their individual activities, the group made a comeback and released their second mini album titled “Rebirth” on October 20, 2009. The group ended promotions for the album on November 29, 2009.

On August 1, 2009, the group started their first Asia tour visiting Seoul, Tokyo, Taiwan, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Thailand. SS501 ended their Asia tour with 2 encore concerts in Seoul on February 27 & 28 respectively.


Destination (2010)

After much anticipation, SS501 released their third mini album titled ‘Destination’ in May 28, 2010. Their title song “Love Ya” was hit song and achieved high record and online music sales. “Love Ya” claimed first place in KBS Music Bank for the 2 weeks of their promotional activities.

Shortly after SS501 celebrated their 5th Year Anniversary since debut, DaeSung Entertainment announced that the group would end their “Love Ya” promotions due to contract expiry with DSP on June 7, 2010.


“Separate, But Together”

On June 28, 2010, it was officially announced that Leader Kim Hyun Joong, had signed a contract with KeyEast Entertainment.

On August 10, 2010, Park Jung Min, following Kim Hyun Joong’s footsteps, officially left DSP Entertainment and joined a newly created company, CNR Media.

Shortly after Park Jung Min’s announcement, on August 27, 2010, it was announced that Kim Hyung Jun had too left DSP Entertainment and joined another company, S-Plus Entertainment.

Finally, on October 14, 2010, the remaining members Heo Young Saeng and Kim Kyu Jong announced that they have signed their contracts with B2M Entertainment.

Despite having to be in different companies, all five of them have affirmed that the group have not disbanded and will still remain as SS501. On top of that, all of the member’s companies have stated that SS501’s activities will be top priority in their contracts.

Members have since started their solo activities under their respective agencies.


To be Continued: Solo Journey (2011)

Kim Hyun Joong played the role of ‘Baek Seung Jo’ in Korean drama which was broadcasted on MBC in September 2010. On the 22 April 2011, it was announced that the official fanclub for Kim Hyun Joong is Henecia. On the 8 June 2011, Kim Hyun Joong released his first solo album . To commemorate the release of his solo album, he held the first of his nationwide concert in Japan in July 2011. The tour continued from November in seven cities across Japan. Kim Hyun Joong released his second mini album ‘Lucky’ on 11 October 2011.

Heo Young Saeng and Kim Kyu Jong held a joint fanmeeting, Kyu Jong & Young Saeng Story In Seoul on 4 December 2010 which continued in Hong Kong, Japan and countries across Asia. Heo Young Saeng was scheduled to launch his solo singing career on 28 April 2011, but had to postpone because he pulled the ligaments on his right hand during dance practice. His debut solo mini album, ‘Let It Go’ was releasd on 12 May 2011. On the 28 September 2011, Heo Young Saeng released his First Solo Story – Special DVD Collection. The official fanclub for Heo Young Saeng is Y.E.S. , which stands for Young-Saeng’s Eternal Supporters. In November and December, Heo Young Saeng will make his theatrical musical debut in ‘The Three Musketeers’.

Premiered in Japan in June 2011, Kim Kyu Jong participated in the musical version of Goong as Prince Shin and once again at Yong Theatre in National Museum of Korea on 16 September 2011. Kim Kyu Jong released his solo album ‘Turn Me On’ on the 27 September 2011. Kim Kyu Jong’s fanclub is officially named ThanKyu.

Park Jung Min was the first members out of the SS501 members to release his solo album ‘Not Alone’. The album was originally planned to be released in November 2010, however it was pushed back the date to 20 January 2011 due to the tension between South Korea and North Korea. Park Jung Min was also involved in a musical ‘Bonds Of Boys’ in Japan as an exchange student from November 18 to November 23. Park Jung Min also expanded his experience in acting by being cast in a Japanese drama, ‘Love Song’ in August. He was also cast in a Taiwanese drama, ‘Fondant Garden’, along with Kingone Wang and Shara Lin.

Kim Hyung Jun was involved in musical ‘Cafe-In’ in Korea from 24 November 2010 to 23 January 2011, playing two characters: Ji Min, and Jeong Min. His solo album ‘My Girl’ was released on 8 March 2011. Kim Hyung Jun was also one of the MC’s for the variety show ‘Midnight Idols’. He released his Japanese single ‘Long Night’ on 27 July 2011. He named his Japanese official fanclub as Jjunaway and JUNUS for his official international and korean fanclub. Currently, Kim Hyung Jun is hosting for Mnet Wide News along with Lee Solji.
